Summary

New York Times Bestseller

In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people。

For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life。 "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says。 "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it。" In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate。 He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today。 The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up。

Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better。 Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault。" Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them。 Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek。

There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear。 While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience。 A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives。

The voice is fun, but it doesn't contain any fresh wisdom in a format I'll use going forward。 Would recommend only if you want to remain on top of pop culture。 If looking for actionable, sustainable self-help principles, this isn't the place。 The voice is fun, but it doesn't contain any fresh wisdom in a format I'll use going forward。 Would recommend only if you want to remain on top of pop culture。 If looking for actionable, sustainable self-help principles, this isn't the place。 。。。more

I came across this book at a time that I was doing a fair bit of "inner work", and I found the concepts helpful to consider in my daily life。 It felt a little repetitive as I went through and not sure I took a whole lot away from it, but I'd still say it was an enjoyable read。 I came across this book at a time that I was doing a fair bit of "inner work", and I found the concepts helpful to consider in my daily life。 It felt a little repetitive as I went through and not sure I took a whole lot away from it, but I'd still say it was an enjoyable read。 。。。more

This dude reminds me of Tim Ferriss - his taglines and basic concept are good, but the more you read, the more you realize he has absolutely no qualifications or training to be preaching what he's preaching, and as he gets deeper into the preaching it starts to make less and less sense。 This dude reminds me of Tim Ferriss - his taglines and basic concept are good, but the more you read, the more you realize he has absolutely no qualifications or training to be preaching what he's preaching, and as he gets deeper into the preaching it starts to make less and less sense。 。。。more

Really an amazing book about how to wisely pick the f*cks to give in life。Some people might not enjoy the foul language dipped style of Mark Manson, but honestly I was okay with it。Writers have their style and me too as a small writer understand that sh*t

This book puts a lot of ideologies or approaches to life that one might have, into words。 And by doing so, it does give one more clarity about their outlooks。 At the same time, the author ruthlessly calls out different forms of bullshit truths that most people in life believe in。

Ajeng Permata

Talks about the most common issues we all face and how to tackle them。 It teaches us to let go of existing beliefs and makes us see the world through a different lens。

Sally Mattner

A relatable book, with no bullshit, and real-world ways to improve your outlook on life。

This book combines style and substance to create an alternate take on mindfulness。There’s nothing here too unreasonable, nor anything new。 I enjoyed reading this book because of the Charles Bukowski archetype, and the smart-ass narrator。 I wouldn’t recommend it, or put it on a summer list, except for those put off by more weighty tomes by Joseph Goldstein or Sam Harris。This book has generated a lot of sales。 If you liked this book, you might also like Waking Up by Sam Harris。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I borrowed this book from my sister and have mixed emotions about it。 Personally I didn’t love this book, I think it’s because I found it very difficult to relate to the author Mark Manson。 I didn’t enjoy his writing style。 In saying this he did have some very valid points and made me question how I look at certain aspects of my life which is why I gave the book 3 stars。 Two things I found extremely irritating was the amount of times he tells his audience that they’re not ‘special’ or ‘unique’ a I borrowed this book from my sister and have mixed emotions about it。 Personally I didn’t love this book, I think it’s because I found it very difficult to relate to the author Mark Manson。 I didn’t enjoy his writing style。 In saying this he did have some very valid points and made me question how I look at certain aspects of my life which is why I gave the book 3 stars。 Two things I found extremely irritating was the amount of times he tells his audience that they’re not ‘special’ or ‘unique’ and goes on to say everyone has problems。 I think everyone understands they’re not the only people with problems but I think it actually alienated the audience by downplaying their issues。 Also telling people to ‘not to give a fuck’ is so much easier said than done。 Personally I think it’s really important to care about certain things in life and that you can grow from them, so in that sense I couldn’t relate to sections of the book just instructs me ‘not to give a fuck。’ The author states he comes from a wealthy family so when he says he won’t do a job he hates and would rather be broke, I think it’s a bit self indulgent to say because he has a family he could financially depend on and a lot of people reading his book don’t have that luxury。 Finally I was left confused when he speaks about one of the ‘worst days’ of his life which was being expelled for bringing drugs onto school property。 He knew full well that doing so would result in expulsion so to try and gain sympathy from the reader for his wrong doings just didn’t make sense to me。 He knew exactly what he was doing。 Overall I am glad I read the book as I did feel like I learnt some things about myself from it, but I wouldn’t read again。 。。。more

If we ignore how this book got really repetitive the further I got into it, it served as a pretty cool introduction into ideas prevalent in Stoicism and Buddhism。 Then again, I felt that some of the advice conflicted with other points made in the book, or was just really convoluted。The beginning was certainly entertaining and engaging。 Just couldn't find enough reason to finish the last 20% of the book。 If we ignore how this book got really repetitive the further I got into it, it served as a pretty cool introduction into ideas prevalent in Stoicism and Buddhism。 Then again, I felt that some of the advice conflicted with other points made in the book, or was just really convoluted。The beginning was certainly entertaining and engaging。 Just couldn't find enough reason to finish the last 20% of the book。 。。。more

Such an insightful book。 I feel bummed a lot of people that could really benefit from this book won’t read it because of the use of the F word but maybe that’s part of his point?! It was packed with so much I will probably need to read again just to learn more。

it didn't change my life but it's not bad。 it seemed a bit repetitive at times, but in the end i enjoyed the advice, the calling out, the pessimism and the blatant honesty。 it didn't change my life but it's not bad。 it seemed a bit repetitive at times, but in the end i enjoyed the advice, the calling out, the pessimism and the blatant honesty。 。。。more

Although he makes a valid point about we choose happiness and what to give a fuck about he seems a bit insensitive for him to say that we are responsible for our emotions 。 Yes people have different types of trauma and everyone has different experiences through it but it is really hard to go through trauma such as rape ,disorders, death etc and he makes it seem like it’s a choice after the incident or accident to decide what they want to do about it。Easier said than done。 People who had real tra Although he makes a valid point about we choose happiness and what to give a fuck about he seems a bit insensitive for him to say that we are responsible for our emotions 。 Yes people have different types of trauma and everyone has different experiences through it but it is really hard to go through trauma such as rape ,disorders, death etc and he makes it seem like it’s a choice after the incident or accident to decide what they want to do about it。Easier said than done。 People who had real trauma will be triggered forever and will always be traumatized 。 And a little incident may trigger them。 And yes he is right a person with trauma can choose to forget what they’ve gone through but can a person with great trauma like rape forget about the rape incident and go through their life normally。 I felt disgusted when he talked about choosing ur path of how u deal with death and how your responsible of ur emotions 。I did put 2 stars because he does put some valid points but I deduct stars for him being an asshole You just have to take something with a grain of salt 。。。more
